Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Shikra, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Not known for a complex song. Vocalizations are typically calls.

Calls

The most common call is a sharp, high-pitched 'tiu-whit, tiu-whit' or 'kik-kik-kik' often repeated. During the breeding season, a more drawn-out 'pee-wit' or 'kwee-wit' may be heard. Alarm calls are sharper and more insistent.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season, particularly around the nest. Also calls when disturbed or in territorial disputes.
