Cooper's Hawk look-alikes

Key differences

Cooper's Hawks are larger overall, with a relatively larger head that projects further beyond the wings in flight. The tail of a Cooper's Hawk is rounded, whereas a Sharp-shinned Hawk's tail is typically square or slightly notched. Cooper's Hawks have a more pronounced cap that contrasts with the nape, while Sharp-shinned Hawks often have a less distinct cap. Juveniles of both species can be very similar, but Cooper's Hawks tend to have finer streaking on the underparts and a more elongated body shape.

Key differences

Northern Goshawks are significantly larger and more robust than Cooper's Hawks. Adults have a distinctive white supercilium (eyebrow stripe) and a darker cap. Their flight is more powerful, and their tail is relatively shorter and broader. Goshawks are typically found in more extensive, mature forests.
