Key differences
Cooper's Hawks are larger overall, with a relatively larger head that projects further beyond the wings in flight. Their tail is rounded (not square-tipped) and often appears longer. Adults have a darker cap that contrasts more sharply with the nape. Juveniles have finer, less extensive streaking on the underparts. The Sharp-shinned Hawk's tarsi are noticeably thinner.
