Field tips
- Scan the Canopy. Look for it perched inconspicuously on a branch within the mid to upper canopy, often waiting for prey. Its cryptic plumage can make it hard to spot.
- Listen for Calls. Its distinctive calls are often the first indication of its presence, especially during the breeding season. Learn to recognize its 'ki-ki-ki' call.
- Observe Prey Activity. Where there are active populations of small birds, squirrels, or lizards, a Crested Goshawk might be hunting nearby.
- Look for Movement. Watch for sudden, powerful flights through the undergrowth or across clearings as it pursues prey.
- Check for Nesting Sites. During the breeding season, look for large stick nests in tall trees, often near the forest edge. Be respectful and maintain distance.
