Boreal Owl song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Boreal Owl, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The male's primary song is a rapid series of soft, hollow, flute-like hoots, 'poo-poo-poo-poo-poo', typically 5-8 notes per second, often accelerating and increasing in volume. It can be heard from a considerable distance.

Calls

Various calls include a sharp 'skiew' alarm call, a 'kewick' contact call, and a soft 'chup' call by the female near the nest. Young birds make begging calls.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season (late winter to early spring), primarily at night, but also at dusk and dawn.
