Northern Black Korhaan look-alikes

Key differences

The Southern Black Korhaan (Afrotis afra) is very similar but has a more restricted range in the Western Cape of South Africa. The key difference is that the male Southern Black Korhaan has an all-black head and neck, lacking the prominent white cheek patch of the Northern Black Korhaan. Females are also very similar, but the female Southern Black Korhaan tends to have a more uniformly dark head and breast, with less streaking than the Northern Black Korhaan female.

Key differences

The Karoo Korhaan is generally larger and has a more upright posture. It lacks the extensive black on the underparts of the male Northern Black Korhaan. Its plumage is more uniformly sandy-brown with fine vermiculations, and it has a greyish head and neck with a black line through the eye. In flight, it shows less prominent white wing patches compared to the Northern Black Korhaan.
