Lovebird song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Lovebird, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Lovebirds do not have complex songs in the traditional sense. Their vocalizations are primarily calls.

Calls

A variety of high-pitched, chattering, twittering, and sometimes screeching calls. They are generally noisy birds, especially when in flocks or communicating with their mates. Calls can be short and sharp 'tsit' or 'scree' notes, often repeated rapidly. Alarm calls are typically louder and more insistent. Contact calls are used to maintain cohesion within flocks or between paired individuals.

When they vocalize

Vocalize frequently throughout the day, particularly when foraging, flying, or interacting with other birds. Calls are most prominent during dawn and dusk and when flocks are on the move.
