Key differences
The Blue-eared Kingfisher has dark blue ear-coverts, whereas the Common Kingfisher has rufous (orange-brown) ear-coverts. The blue on the upperparts of the Blue-eared Kingfisher is generally darker and more purplish-cobalt, while the Common Kingfisher's blue is often brighter and more greenish-blue. The white neck patch is also more prominent in the Blue-eared Kingfisher.
