Where does the White-browed Crake live?

The White-browed Crake lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Wetlands, marshes, swamps, rice paddies, mangroves, and damp grasslands.

Geographic range

Southeast Asia, including parts of India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia.

Preferred environments

Prefers freshwater and brackish wetlands with dense emergent vegetation such as reeds, sedges, grasses, and mangroves. It is often found at the edges of ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers, as well as in flooded agricultural fields.

Elevation range

Primarily lowlands, from sea level up to approximately 1,000 meters.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for Calls. The White-browed Crake is more often heard than seen. Learn its distinctive 'kek-kek-kek' calls, especially at dawn and dusk.
2. Patience and Stealth. Approach wetland edges quietly and patiently. Use binoculars to scan dense vegetation. They are very shy and will quickly retreat if they detect movement.
3. Look for Movement. Watch for subtle movements in the reeds or grasses, such as a rustle or a brief glimpse as it crosses a small open patch.
4. Check Water Edges. Focus on the interface between water and dense vegetation, where they often forage.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, though some local movements may occur in response to water levels or food availability. Not considered a long-distance migrant.
