Blue-fronted Amazon look-alikes

Key differences

This is a subspecies of Amazona aestiva, sometimes considered a separate species. It typically has more extensive yellow on the wing-bend (carpal joint) and often more yellow on the face, sometimes covering the entire crown and cheeks, with the blue restricted to a narrow band above the cere. The nominate subspecies (A. a. aestiva) has less yellow on the wing-bend and more blue on the forehead/crown.

Smaller in size. Has a red forehead and lores, with a red patch on the bend of the wing. Lacks the extensive blue and yellow on the head seen in Amazona aestiva. Its range is more restricted to southern Brazil and northeastern Argentina.

Has a blue crown and yellow cheeks, but the yellow is typically less extensive than in A. aestiva. The most distinguishing feature is the orange speculum (patch on the secondary flight feathers), which is absent in A. aestiva. Its range overlaps in some areas but extends further north.
