Geographic range

Preferred environments
Shallow freshwater bodies with abundant aquatic vegetation and a high density of large freshwater snails. They often forage in cultivated fields, especially rice paddies, and roost in trees near water.

Typically found in lowlands, up to approximately 1,500 meters.
Where to look
Rice Paddies
Often seen foraging in flooded rice fields, especially after harvest when snails are abundant.
Shallow Lakes and Ponds
Look along the edges of shallow freshwater bodies, where they wade to probe for food.
Marshes and Swamps
These wetland habitats provide ideal foraging and nesting grounds.
Communal Roosts
At dusk, large numbers can be found congregating in tall trees near water bodies for communal roosting.
Field tips
- Look for foraging behavior. Observe them wading in shallow water, often with their bill partially submerged, probing the mud for snails. This behavior is quite distinctive.
- Scan tree lines near water. They often perch conspicuously in trees, especially during the heat of the day or at roosting sites.
- Visit during breeding season. During the monsoon season, large nesting colonies are active and vocal, making them easier to locate and observe.
- Use a scope or binoculars. The bill gap is best observed with optical aids, especially at a distance.
Migration
Mostly resident throughout its range, but undertakes local movements in response to rainfall and food availability. Some populations in northern parts of its range may show short-distance migratory movements.
