Geographic range
Disjunct populations in central and eastern South America: the Pantanal region of Brazil, eastern Bolivia, and northeastern Paraguay; the Gerais region of Brazil (Maranhão, Piauí, Bahia, Tocantins, Goiás, Minas Gerais); and a smaller, isolated population in the lower Amazon basin of Brazil (Pará).
Preferred environments
Areas rich in specific palm species (e.g., Acrocomia aculeata, Attalea phalerata, Syagrus coronata) whose nuts form their primary diet. They also favor areas with large, mature trees for nesting and roosting.
Elevation range
Primarily lowlands, typically below 500 meters (1,640 feet).
Where to look
Pantanal, Brazil
The Pantanal wetlands offer the best opportunities to see Hyacinth Macaws, particularly in the southern Pantanal (e.g., near Porto Jofre, Caiman Ecological Refuge). They are relatively common here due to abundant palm trees.
Gerais Region, Brazil
Areas within the Gerais region, such as the Jalapão State Park in Tocantins, also host populations, though they may be less concentrated than in the Pantanal.
Eastern Bolivia and Northeastern Paraguay
Smaller, more fragmented populations exist in these areas, often requiring more specialized expeditions to locate.
Field tips
- Look for Palm Groves. Hyacinth Macaws are highly dependent on palm nuts. Focus your search in areas with dense stands of palm trees, especially those bearing fruit.
- Listen for Calls. Their loud, distinctive calls often give away their presence before they are seen. Listen for their deep, guttural squawks, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Observe Roosting Sites. They often gather in large, tall trees for communal roosting at night. Observing these sites at sunrise or sunset can be productive.
- Visit Water Sources. Like many birds, they visit rivers and ponds to drink, especially during the dry season. Riverine forests are also important habitats.
- Hire a Local Guide. Local guides in their range, particularly in the Pantanal, are invaluable for locating these birds due to their extensive knowledge of local habitats and behaviors.
Migration
Resident throughout their range, not migratory. They may undertake local movements in response to food availability.
