Biomes

Geographic range
Breeds in arctic tundra across North America, Greenland, and Eurasia, and in alpine tundra of western North America. Winters across much of the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.
Preferred environments
Open, treeless areas with short vegetation or bare ground, often near water. During migration and winter, they favor plowed fields, short-grass prairies, golf courses, and muddy shorelines.
Elevation range
Breeds from sea level in arctic regions up to 4,000 meters (13,000 ft) in alpine areas. Winters from sea level to moderate elevations.
Where to look
Arctic Tundra
During the breeding season, look in open, sparsely vegetated areas of the Arctic and subarctic.
Alpine Meadows
In western North America, they breed in high-elevation alpine zones above the treeline.
Agricultural Fields
During migration and winter, check plowed fields, stubble fields, and other open agricultural lands.
Shorelines and Mudflats
Often found foraging along the edges of lakes, ponds, and coastal areas during migration and winter.
Short-grass Prairies and Golf Courses
Any open, short-grass habitat can host wintering or migrating pipits.
Field tips
- Scan open ground. Pipits are cryptically colored and blend in well. Use binoculars to scan open ground for movement, especially the characteristic tail-wagging.
- Listen for calls. Their distinctive 'pip-pip' call is often the first indication of their presence, especially when they flush.
- Look for flocks. During migration and winter, they often occur in loose flocks. Spotting one may lead to finding many more.
- Check disturbed areas. Plowed fields, construction sites, and other areas with bare or short vegetation are often favored by pipits.
- Be patient. Their camouflage is excellent. Sit quietly and observe, allowing them to reveal themselves through movement or calls.
Migration
Long-distance migrant. Breeds in northern and high-altitude regions, migrating south to warmer climates for the winter. Migration occurs in broad fronts, often at night.
