Geographic range
Endemic to Florida, USA. Its distribution is highly fragmented, primarily found in central and south-central Florida.
Preferred environments
Requires open, sandy areas dominated by low-growing oaks (e.g., sand live oak, myrtle oak, scrub oak) with scattered pines, and bare sandy patches for acorn caching. Optimal habitat has oak canopy height between 1-3 meters (3-10 feet) and a mosaic of open and vegetated areas.
Elevation range
Typically found at low elevations, from sea level up to approximately 60 meters (200 feet).

Many Florida State Parks and Wildlife Management Areas that preserve scrub habitat are excellent places, such as Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Lake Kissimmee State Park, Oscar Scherer State Park, and the Lake Wales Ridge National Wildlife Refuge.
Private Conservation Lands
Some private lands managed for conservation, like Archbold Biological Station, offer opportunities for viewing, often through guided tours or research programs.
Residential Areas with Scrub
In some areas, scrub-jays have adapted to fragmented scrub habitat within residential developments, particularly those that maintain native landscaping.
Field tips
- Visit Scrub Habitat. Focus your search exclusively on Florida's unique scrub ecosystems. They will not be found in typical pine forests, wetlands, or suburban parks without scrub.
- Look for Low-Growing Oaks. Scan areas with dense, low-growing oak shrubs (1-3 meters tall) and open sandy patches. This is their preferred foraging and nesting habitat.
- Listen for Calls. Their loud, scratchy 'skree' calls are often the first indication of their presence. They are quite vocal, especially when disturbed or communicating within their family group.
- Be Patient and Observe. Scrub-jays are often curious and may approach observers, especially if you remain still. Watch for family groups foraging on the ground or perched on low branches.
- Early Morning or Late Afternoon. Activity is often highest during the cooler parts of the day, making these times ideal for observation.
Migration
Non-migratory; they are year-round residents within their territories.
