Kiwi song and calls

Song

Males typically emit a shrill, ascending whistle, often repeated, while females produce a harsher, lower-pitched, guttural 'kwe-kwe' or 'kurr-kurr' call. These calls are used for territorial defense and communication between pairs.

Calls

Various grunts, snorts, and hisses are used during foraging, alarm, or aggressive encounters. The 'kiwi' call itself is a distinctive, loud, and far-carrying whistle.

When they vocalize
