Where does the Verdin live?

The Verdin lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Desert scrub, arid grasslands, riparian zones within deserts.

Geographic range

Southwestern United States (southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, southern Texas) and much of Mexico (Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, south to Oaxaca and Puebla).

Preferred environments

Arid and semi-arid habitats dominated by thorny shrubs and small trees such as mesquite, acacia, palo verde, creosote bush, and catclaw acacia. They prefer areas with dense, spiny vegetation for nesting and foraging.

Elevation range

Typically from sea level up to 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), occasionally higher in some parts of Mexico.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for Calls. Their sharp 'chip' calls and whistled songs are often the first indication of their presence, especially when they are hidden in dense foliage.
2. Watch for Movement. Verdins are constantly moving, flitting quickly between branches and gleaning insects. Look for small, rapid movements within shrubs.
3. Check Thorny Shrubs. Focus your search on dense, thorny bushes, as these provide both food and protection. They often forage low to the ground.
4. Look for Nests. During the breeding season, their distinctive spherical nests are often visible, though well-camouflaged, in thorny vegetation. Observing a bird carrying nesting material can lead you to a nest.

Migration

Non-migratory; a permanent resident throughout its range. They may make short, local movements in response to food availability or weather conditions.
