Field tips

  1. Listen for Calls. Plain Parakeets are often heard before they are seen. Their noisy, high-pitched calls are a good indicator of their presence, especially when they are flying overhead in flocks.
  2. Scan Tree Canopies. They spend most of their time foraging in the upper and middle layers of trees. Use binoculars to scan the foliage for movement and feeding activity.
  3. Visit Fruiting Trees. Focus on trees that are currently bearing fruit or flowers, as these are prime feeding locations for parakeets.
  4. Observe Flocks. While individuals can be cryptic in green foliage, flocks are much easier to spot, especially when they fly between feeding sites or to roosts.

Migration

Resident throughout its range; no significant migratory movements. May undertake local movements in search of food.
