Where to look
Rocky Outcrops and Cliffs
These are prime roosting and nesting sites. Scan ledges, caves, and crevices.
Ravines and Gorges
Often found in the steep, rocky sides of ravines, providing shelter and hunting perches.
Scrub Forests and Open Woodlands
Look for them perched silently in trees at the edge of these habitats, especially near rocky areas.
Ruins and Old Buildings
Occasionally found roosting or nesting in abandoned structures, particularly in rural areas.
Field tips
- Time of Day. Best observed at dusk or dawn when they become active. During the day, they are cryptic and well-camouflaged, often roosting in shaded, secluded spots.
- Listen for Calls. Their distinctive hooting call is often the first indication of their presence. Learn to recognize it.
- Scan Roosting Sites. Carefully scan rocky ledges, dense tree cover, and sheltered spots on cliffs for their camouflaged forms during the day. Look for whitewash (droppings) below potential roosts.
- Look for Pellets. Undigested prey remains are regurgitated as pellets. Finding these under a tree or cliff face can indicate a regular roosting spot.
- Use Binoculars. Essential for spotting them in their camouflaged daytime roosts and for observing details of their plumage and eye color.
- Be Patient and Quiet. Owls are sensitive to disturbance. Approach quietly and maintain a respectful distance to avoid flushing them.
