Least Bittern

Key differences
The Least Bittern is significantly smaller, much more secretive, and has a more uniform buffy-brown plumage with dark back and crown, and prominent buffy wing patches visible in flight. It lacks the chestnut neck and dark cap of the Green Heron.
American Bittern
Botaurus lentiginosus
Key differences
The American Bittern is much larger, streaky brown overall, and has a distinctive black neck stripe. It is also much more secretive and typically found in dense marsh vegetation, rarely perching openly like a Green Heron.
Striated Heron

The Striated Heron is a very close relative, found in the Old World, South America, and parts of Central America. It is extremely similar in appearance, often considered conspecific with the Green Heron (Butorides virescens was formerly a subspecies of B. striata). Key differences are subtle: Striated Herons tend to have a slightly grayer neck and breast, and less distinct chestnut coloration. Geographic range is the primary differentiator.
