Indian Nightjar song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Indian Nightjar, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The song is a distinctive, monotonous, and repetitive 'chuk-chuk-chuk-chuk...' or 'churr-churr-churr...' call, often likened to the sound of a stone skipping on ice or a motor starting. It can be sustained for long periods, especially during the breeding season.

Calls

In addition to the song, it produces a soft 'quip' or 'chup' call, often given in flight or as an alarm. A soft 'whirr' may also be heard during courtship displays.

When they vocalize

Primarily vocalizes at dusk, throughout the night, and at dawn, especially during the breeding season. Calls are less frequent outside of the breeding period.
