Linnet look-alikes

Key differences

The Twite is very similar but lacks the red on the head and breast of the breeding male Linnet. It has a yellowish bill (especially in winter), a pinkish rump (often difficult to see), and a more streaked throat. Its call is a distinctive 'twa-eet'.

Key differences

Redpolls are smaller, have a distinctive red forehead patch (present in both sexes, though brighter in males), and a black chin patch. They also have two prominent wing bars and a more deeply forked tail. Linnets lack the black chin and have a more extensive red breast in males.

Key differences

Serins are smaller and stockier, with a much shorter, stubbier bill. Males are bright yellow on the face, breast, and rump, which Linnets lack. Serins also have a more heavily streaked back and flanks.
