How it forages

Primarily granivorous, specializing in small seeds, particularly those of thistles (Carduus, Cirsium) and teasels (Dipsacus), from which it derives its scientific name 'Carduelis'. It uses its fine, pointed beak to extract seeds from seed heads, often clinging acrobatically to the plant stems. Also consumes seeds from dandelions, burdock, alder, birch, and various composites. During the breeding season, especially when feeding young, it will supplement its diet with small insects and spiders.
