Field tips
- Look for Nests. During the breeding season, actively search under bridges, culverts, and eaves of buildings for their distinctive mud nests. Observing nest activity is a reliable way to find them.
- Scan the Skies. In suitable open habitats, scan the sky for swallows. Their distinctive flight pattern and coloration will help distinguish them from other aerial insectivores.
- Listen for Calls. Pay attention to their 'chip' or 'chwit' calls, especially when they are flying or near potential nesting sites.
- Observe Foraging Behavior. Watch for swallows hawking insects in open areas. Their rufous underparts will be visible as they bank and turn.
Migration
Many populations are migratory. West African populations move south during the dry season. East African populations are more resident or undertake local movements. Southern African populations are intra-African migrants, breeding in the south during the austral summer (October-April) and moving north to central Africa during the austral winter.
