Calls

A variety of calls, including a harsh, nasal 'kwaaa' or 'kyarr', often repeated, especially when alarmed or interacting socially. Also produces a softer 'gwa gwa' sound and sharper 'kek-kek-kek' calls. Calls are generally higher-pitched and less raucous than larger gulls.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season at colonies, and when disturbed or competing for food. Less vocal during non-breeding periods, except for alarm calls or social interactions.
