During the breeding season, males clear small 'courts' on the forest floor for their displays. Locating these sites (often by listening for calls) is the best way to observe males.
Mid-story and Canopy
While males display on the ground, both sexes forage in the mid-story and canopy for fruits and insects. Look for movement in the foliage.
Field tips
- Listen for Calls. The male's distinctive harsh 'skraaaah' calls are often the first indication of its presence, especially during the breeding season. Learn to recognize these vocalizations.
- Patience at Lek Sites. If you locate a lek, remain still and patient. Males will often return to their display courts repeatedly. Use binoculars for detailed observation.
- Focus on Movement. In dense forest, spotting birds can be challenging. Look for subtle movements in the foliage, especially around fruiting trees.
- Early Morning/Late Afternoon. These are the most active times for many forest birds, including the Magnificent Bird-of-paradise, particularly for male displays.
Migration
Sedentary; no migratory patterns are known. It is a resident species throughout its range.
