Where does the Woolly-necked Stork live?

Geographic range

Disjunct distribution across sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Asia. In Africa, from Senegal east to Ethiopia and south to South Africa. In Asia, from India and Sri Lanka east through Southeast Asia to Indonesia and the Philippines.

Preferred environments

Prefers freshwater wetlands such as marshes, swamps, rice paddies, floodplains, and edges of rivers and lakes. Also frequents open grasslands, cultivated fields, and sometimes even urban parks with suitable water bodies. Often found near human habitation.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to 1,500 meters, occasionally higher.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Scan water bodies and adjacent open areas. Woolly-necked Storks are often conspicuous, standing tall in shallow water or on open ground. Use binoculars to check for the distinctive neck plumage.
2. Look for perching birds. They frequently perch on tall trees, especially dead snags, which serve as good vantage points for hunting or roosting.
3. Observe foraging behavior. Watch for their characteristic slow walk and probing or snatching movements while feeding in wetlands.
4. Visit during the dry season in tropical regions. In many parts of their range, receding water levels during the dry season concentrate prey, making them easier to find.

Migration

Generally resident throughout its range, but local movements occur in response to rainfall and food availability. Some populations in drier regions may undertake short-distance migrations.
