1. Listen for the Song. The 'zit-zit-zit' song is the primary way to locate this species. It's often heard before the bird is seen. Once you hear it, scan the sky for the undulating flight.
2. Observe Display Flight. During the breeding season, males perform their characteristic song flight frequently. This is the best time to observe and identify them.
3. Patience and Binoculars. When perched, they are very cryptic and blend into the vegetation. Use binoculars to scan dense grass and reeds for movement. They often perch briefly on a prominent grass stem before dropping back into cover.
4. Early Morning/Late Afternoon. Activity, including singing, is often highest during the cooler parts of the day.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, though some northern populations may undertake short-distance movements or altitudinal migration. Some populations in arid regions may be nomadic in response to rainfall.
