Where does the African Rock Pigeon live?

Savanna, grasslands, semi-arid regions, urban areas, rocky cliffs, gorges, and mountainous terrain.

Geographic range

Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Mauritania and Senegal east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south to South Africa. Also found in parts of the Arabian Peninsula (Yemen, Saudi Arabia).

Preferred environments

Favors areas with cliffs, rocky outcrops, or tall buildings for roosting and nesting, often near open country for foraging. Frequently found in towns and cities, agricultural lands, and areas with scattered trees.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 3,000 meters, occasionally higher.

Field tips

1. Look for flocks. African Rock Pigeons are often found in groups, especially when feeding or roosting. Scan open areas and building ledges for congregations.
2. Listen for calls. Their distinctive cooing calls can often lead you to their presence, particularly in urban settings or near roosting sites.
3. Check cliffs and buildings. These birds prefer vertical structures for nesting and roosting. Look up at ledges, eaves, and crevices.
4. Observe feeding behavior. They are primarily ground feeders. Watch open fields, lawns, and paved areas for birds foraging for seeds.

Migration

Generally resident throughout its range, though some local movements may occur in response to food availability or seasonal changes in arid regions. Not considered a migratory species.
