Decidueye song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Decidueye, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

The primary song is a deep, resonant 'hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo' series, often starting softly and increasing in volume, with a slight pause between the first two hoots. It can be heard over long distances, particularly during the breeding season.

Calls

Various calls include a sharp 'kewick' alarm call, a hissing sound when threatened, and soft 'whimpers' or 'chitters' exchanged between mates or with young. Juveniles emit a begging 'shriek' when hungry.

When they vocalize

Most vocal during the breeding season (late winter to early spring) and at night, especially at dusk and dawn. Calls can also be heard sporadically throughout the night.
