Several birds can be mistaken for the White-winged Kite. Compare the key differences below to confirm your sighting.

Birds to compare

Black-shouldered Kite

Elanus axillaris

Key differences

The Black-shouldered Kite (found in Australia) is extremely similar in appearance and was formerly considered conspecific with the White-winged Kite. The primary difference is geographic range. Morphologically, the Black-shouldered Kite typically has a slightly darker grey back and more extensive black on the underside of the primary flight feathers.

Pearl Kite

Gampsonyx swainsonii

Key differences

The Pearl Kite is much smaller, has a more rufous wash on the flanks and thighs, and lacks the pure white tail and extensive white underparts of the White-winged Kite. Its flight is also less buoyant, and it rarely hovers as extensively.

Swallow-tailed Kite

Elanoides forficatus

Key differences

While also a white raptor, the Swallow-tailed Kite is much larger, has a deeply forked tail, and extensive black on its wings and back. Its flight is incredibly graceful but distinct from the hovering of the White-winged Kite.
