Purple Finch look-alikes

Key differences

Male Purple Finches have a more uniform raspberry-red wash over the head and back, appearing 'dipped in raspberry juice', whereas male House Finches have red restricted to the head, breast, and rump, with streaky brown flanks and belly. House Finches also have a more conical, less rounded head profile. Female Purple Finches have a stronger facial pattern with a distinct white supercilium and dark line through the eye, and coarser, less defined streaking on the underparts compared to female House Finches, which have a plainer face and finer streaking.

Key differences

Male Cassin's Finches have a brighter, more restricted red crown, with a pinkish wash on the breast and rump, and streaky brown flanks. They often show a small 'peak' on the crown. Female Cassin's Finches have finer streaking on the underparts and a less distinct facial pattern than Purple Finches. Cassin's Finches are also typically found at higher elevations in western mountains.
