Geographic range
Extensive range across Asia, from Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Egypt (Sinai Peninsula) eastward through Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Preferred environments
Highly adaptable, preferring open country with scattered trees, cultivation, and proximity to water, but often found far from water sources when hunting terrestrial prey. It thrives in human-modified landscapes.
Elevation range
Primarily lowlands, but can be found up to 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) in some parts of its range, particularly in the Himalayas.

Agricultural Lands
Often seen perched on power lines, fences, or trees overlooking fields, especially those with irrigation.

Look for them in areas where forests transition to open spaces, providing both perches and hunting grounds.
Gardens and Parks
Common in suburban and urban green spaces, particularly if there are ponds or open lawns.

Found in these habitats, though less exclusively than some other kingfisher species.
Rivers, Lakes, and Canals
While often terrestrial, they are still frequently found near water bodies, using them for fishing or drinking.
Field tips
- Listen for its call. Its loud, chattering call is often the first indication of its presence. Learn to recognize this distinctive vocalization.
- Scan prominent perches. They often perch conspicuously on exposed branches, power lines, telephone poles, or fences, providing excellent viewing opportunities.
- Look for movement on the ground. Since they hunt terrestrial prey, observe open ground areas for their sudden dives from perches.

Migration
Mostly resident throughout its range, but some populations, particularly in the northern parts of its distribution (e.g., Pakistan, northern India), undertake short-distance altitudinal or local migrations in winter. Vagrants have been recorded outside its typical range.
