Where does the Common Fiscal live?

Savanna, shrubland, grassland, agricultural land, suburban gardens, open woodlands.

Geographic range

Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Mauritania and Senegal east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south to South Africa.

Preferred environments

Prefers open habitats with scattered bushes, trees, or fences for perching and hunting. Often found in disturbed areas, farmlands, and suburban parks and gardens.

Elevation range

Sea level up to 3,000 meters, though typically found at lower to mid-altitudes.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Look for exposed perches. Common Fiscals prefer to hunt from high, exposed perches. Scan the tops of bushes, small trees, fence posts, and utility lines.
2. Listen for calls. Their harsh, scolding calls are often the first indication of their presence, even before you see them.
3. Observe hunting behavior. Watch for their characteristic swooping flight from a perch to the ground to catch prey, and their return to a perch.
4. Check for 'larders'. In areas where they are common, look for impaled insects or small vertebrates on thorns or barbed wire, which indicates a fiscal's territory.

Migration

Mostly resident throughout its range, though some local movements may occur in response to food availability or during severe weather.
