Woodchat Shrike look-alikes

Key differences

Male Red-backed Shrikes have a grey head, a reddish-brown back, and a black mask. Woodchat Shrikes have a chestnut-red cap and a black back with a white scapular patch. Females and juveniles are more challenging; Red-backed Shrike females are generally browner overall with fine barring, while Woodchat Shrike females have a browner cap and a more distinct, though duller, mask.

Key differences

Masked Shrikes are smaller and more slender. Males have a black crown and nape, a prominent white supercilium, and a black mask. Their underparts are white with orange-rufous flanks. Woodchat Shrikes have a chestnut cap and entirely white underparts (though sometimes with a pinkish wash).

Key differences

Lesser Grey Shrikes are larger and have a grey head and back, a broad black mask, and a pinkish wash on the breast and belly. They lack the chestnut cap and black back of the Woodchat Shrike.
