European Herring Gull song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the European Herring Gull, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Does not have a true song. Vocalizations are primarily calls.

Calls

A wide repertoire of loud, raucous calls. The most characteristic is a long, drawn-out 'kyow-kyow-kyow' or 'gull-gull-gull' often given with the head thrown back (the 'long call'). Also produces short 'gah-gah-gah' alarm calls, 'mewing' calls, and 'choking' calls during courtship or territorial disputes.

When they vocalize

Vocalizes year-round, but most frequently and intensely during the breeding season and when competing for food.
