Gull song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Gull, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Gulls do not have complex songs. Their vocalizations are primarily calls.

Calls

A wide repertoire of calls, varying significantly between species. Common calls include loud, raucous 'kyow', 'kya-kya-kya', or 'gah-gah-gah' calls, often described as 'laughing' or 'mewing'. Alarm calls are typically sharper and more urgent. Contact calls are softer. Begging calls of juveniles are distinct. The 'long call' is a characteristic series of notes often given with the head thrown back.

When they vocalize

Vocalize year-round, but most frequently and intensely during the breeding season, when establishing territories, attracting mates, and defending nests. Also vocalize when foraging, in alarm, or during social interactions.
