Gull song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Gull, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Gulls do not have a true song. Their vocalizations are primarily calls.

Calls

A diverse repertoire of harsh, raucous calls. Common calls include the 'long call' (a series of loud, far-carrying 'kyow-kyow-kyow' or 'kyaaa-kyaaa-kyaaa' notes, often given with the head thrown back), alarm calls (short, sharp 'kek-kek-kek'), begging calls from juveniles, and various contact calls. Calls vary significantly between species.

When they vocalize

Vocalize year-round, but most frequently during the breeding season for territorial defense, pair bonding, and communication within colonies. Also vocalize when foraging, in alarm, or during social interactions.
