Song

Does not have a complex song. Its primary vocalization is a sharp, high-pitched 'peek' or 'pik' call. Also produces a rapid, rattling call, often described as a 'rattle' or 'whinny', which descends slightly in pitch.

Calls

The most common call is a sharp 'peek!' or 'chink!' note. When agitated or communicating over distance, it gives a rapid, descending 'rattle' call, often lasting 1-2 seconds. Also drums on resonant surfaces.

When they vocalize

Calls and drums year-round, but vocalizations and drumming activity increase significantly during the breeding season (late winter through spring) for territorial defense and mate attraction.
