Occasionally, escaped domestic turkeys may establish small feral populations in suitable habitats near human settlements, though these are less common than feral chickens.
Field tips
- Look for human presence. Domestic turkeys are almost exclusively found in association with human activity. If you are in a wild, remote area, it is highly unlikely to be a domestic turkey unless it's a recent escapee.
- Observe plumage. The wide variety of plumage colors, especially pure white, is a strong indicator of a domestic bird. Wild turkeys have a more consistent, iridescent bronze coloration.
- Note flight ability. If the bird struggles to fly or can only manage short, low flights, it is likely domestic. Wild turkeys are strong, agile flyers.
- Listen for calls. The gobble is unmistakable, but also listen for the less wary clucks and yelps that might indicate a domesticated bird accustomed to human presence.
