Biomes
Deciduous and mixed forests, open woodlands, forest edges, agricultural lands.
Geographic range
Native to North America, found across much of the eastern, central, and southwestern United States, as well as parts of southern Canada and northern Mexico. Six recognized subspecies have slightly different distributions.
Preferred environments
Requires a mix of mature forest for roosting and cover, and open areas (fields, clearings) for foraging. Access to water is also important.
Elevation range
Sea level up to approximately 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) in mountainous regions.
Where to look
Forests and Woodlands
Look in mature deciduous or mixed forests, especially those with an understory of shrubs and open clearings.
Forest Edges and Agricultural Lands
Often found at the interface between forests and open fields, where they can forage for grains and insects.
River Bottoms and Swamps
Certain subspecies, like the Osceola Turkey, prefer wetter habitats.
Field tips
- Listen for Gobbles. During spring, listen for the distinctive gobble of males, particularly at dawn and dusk. This is often the easiest way to locate them.
- Look for Tracks and Droppings. Wild Turkeys leave large, three-toed tracks and distinctive droppings (J-shaped for males, spiral for females) on the ground.
- Scan Openings. They often emerge from dense cover into open fields or clearings to feed, especially in the morning and late afternoon.
- Be Patient and Quiet. Wild Turkeys have excellent eyesight and hearing. Move slowly and quietly, and use binoculars to scan for movement.
- Observe Roosting Sites. They roost in large trees at night. Observing them flying up to or down from roosts can be a good way to find them.
Migration
Non-migratory; resident throughout its range.
