Where does the Song Sparrow live?

The Song Sparrow lives in specific habitats and regions. Knowing where, and when, to look improves your chances of a successful sighting.

Biomes

Temperate forests, grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, urban/suburban areas.

Geographic range

Widespread across North America, from Alaska and Canada south through the United States and into central Mexico. Absent from the extreme Arctic and parts of the southeastern U.S. coastal plain.

Preferred environments

Prefers areas with dense, low vegetation for cover and foraging, such as shrubby fields, forest edges, riparian zones, marshes, suburban gardens, and parks. Often found near water.

Elevation range

Sea level up to approximately 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) in mountainous regions.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for the Song. The Song Sparrow's distinctive and varied song is often the first clue to its presence. Learn to recognize its typical pattern.
2. Scan Low Vegetation. They spend much of their time foraging on or near the ground. Look for movement in dense shrubs, tall grasses, and leaf litter.
3. Watch for Tail Pumping. When perched or moving, they often pump their tail, which can help distinguish them from other sparrows.
4. Use a Feeder. They are frequent visitors to bird feeders, especially those offering mixed seeds or millet, and often feed on the ground beneath hanging feeders.

Migration

Northern populations are migratory, moving south for the winter. Southern and coastal populations are largely resident year-round. Migration is typically short to medium distance.
