Preferred environments
Highly adaptable, but typically found in open areas, especially near water sources such as rivers, streams, dams, ponds, and coastal shores. Also common in gardens, parks, cultivated fields, sports grounds, and around human settlements where short grass and bare ground are available for foraging.

Where to look
Gardens and Parks
Common in suburban and urban gardens, parks, and sports fields, especially those with short grass and access to water.
Water Bodies
Look along the edges of rivers, streams, dams, ponds, and coastal shores. They often forage on exposed mudflats or sandy banks.
Agricultural Areas
Frequently found in cultivated fields, pastures, and other agricultural landscapes.
Human Settlements
Very accustomed to human presence, often seen around buildings, car parks, and outdoor eating areas.
Field tips
- Look for movement. Their constant tail wagging makes them quite conspicuous, even when foraging on the ground. Scan open areas for this distinctive movement.
- Listen for calls. Their sharp 'tseep' call is often the first indication of their presence, especially when they fly past.
- Check near water. Always check the edges of any water body, as they are frequently found foraging there.
- Observe foraging. Watch their characteristic stop-and-go foraging style on short grass or bare ground.
Migration
Mostly resident throughout its range, with some localized movements in response to food availability or harsh weather conditions. There is no significant long-distance migration.
