Geographic range
Native to central South America, including parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Feral populations are established in numerous countries worldwide, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, and Israel.
Preferred environments
Highly adaptable, preferring open woodlands, palm groves, and increasingly, human-modified landscapes such as parks, gardens, and urban areas with abundant food sources and nesting sites (e.g., utility poles, tall trees).

Urban Parks and Gardens
Common in cities and suburbs where they have access to food (fruit trees, bird feeders) and nesting sites (tall trees, utility poles).
Agricultural Areas
In their native range and some introduced areas, they can be found in orchards and crop fields, where they feed on grains and fruits.
Power Lines and Cell Towers
These structures are frequently used as sites for their large communal nests, making them easy to spot.
Woodlands and Forest Edges
In their native South American range, they inhabit more natural open woodland and forest edge habitats.
Field tips
- Listen for their calls. Their loud, distinctive squawks and chattering are often the first sign of their presence. Follow the sound to locate the flock.
- Look for nests. Scan tall trees, utility poles, and other elevated structures for their large, bulky stick nests. These nests are unmistakable.
- Observe feeding behavior. Look for them feeding on fruit trees, seed-bearing plants, or even at bird feeders in urban areas.
- Visit known hotspots. In areas with established feral populations, local birding groups or online resources often list specific parks or neighborhoods where they are reliably seen.
Migration
Resident throughout their native and introduced ranges; they do not undertake seasonal migrations.
