Where does the African Pygmy Goose live?

Biomes

Freshwater wetlands, swamps, slow-moving rivers, lakes, and lagoons.

Geographic range

Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal and Gambia east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south to South Africa. Also found on Madagascar.

Preferred environments

Prefers still or slow-moving waters with abundant floating vegetation (e.g., water lilies, Nymphaea spp.) and emergent vegetation, often with scattered trees or snags for perching.

Elevation range

Typically found from sea level up to approximately 1500 meters, occasionally higher.

Where to look

Field tips

1. Scan floating vegetation. They often hide among water lilies and other aquatic plants, making them difficult to spot. Look for movement or small heads popping up.
2. Check overhanging branches. African Pygmy Geese frequently perch in trees or on snags overhanging the water, especially during the heat of the day or for roosting.
3. Use binoculars. Their small size and cryptic habits necessitate good optics for clear identification, especially of the subtle female plumage.
4. Be patient and quiet. They can be shy and easily disturbed. Approach wetland areas slowly and quietly.
5. Look during early morning or late afternoon. These are typically their most active feeding times.

Migration

Generally resident, but undertakes local movements in response to water levels and food availability. Some populations may make longer-distance movements during severe droughts or floods.
