Field tips
- Listen at Dusk/Dawn. The best time to detect Australian Boobooks is by listening for their distinctive 'boo-book' call just after sunset or before sunrise.
- Spotlighting. Use a spotlight at night to scan tree branches. Their bright yellow eyes will reflect the light, making them easier to spot. Be mindful not to disturb them.
- Look for Roosts. During the day, search dense tree foliage, especially near the trunk, for a camouflaged owl. Look for whitewash (droppings) or pellets on the ground beneath potential roosts.
- Check Tree Hollows. In breeding season, they may be found near or in tree hollows, which they use for nesting.
Migration
Mostly resident throughout its range, though some localized movements or dispersal of juveniles may occur. Birds in southern Australia may move north during winter.
