Preferred environments

Quarries and Railway Cuttings
Human-made rocky environments like stone quarries, railway embankments, and road cuttings are frequently inhabited.
Urban and Suburban Areas
They are often found in cities and towns, particularly in older areas with stone buildings, bridges, and walls, or in parks with rocky features.
Field tips
- Look for movement on rocks. Scan rocky areas for small, dark birds perching prominently. They often bob their tail or flick their wings.
- Observe flight. When a dark bird flies from a rocky perch, look for the flash of rufous on the rump and tail. This is the most definitive visual cue.
- Listen for calls and song. Their distinctive song and calls can often lead you to their location, especially during the breeding season.
- Check human-modified structures. Don't limit your search to natural habitats; bridges, old buildings, and walls are often favored spots.
- Be patient and observe. They can be quite shy but will often return to favored perches. Patience will be rewarded with good views.
Migration
Resident throughout its range, with no significant migratory movements. Local movements may occur in response to food availability or habitat changes.
