Where does the Cape Sparrow live?

Biomes

Savanna, shrubland, grassland, urban and suburban areas, agricultural lands.

Geographic range

Endemic to southern Africa, ranging from Angola and Zambia south through Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and South Africa.

Preferred environments

Highly adaptable, preferring open country with scattered trees and shrubs, often near human habitation, cultivated areas, gardens, parks, and farmyards. Less common in dense forests or arid deserts.

Elevation range

Sea level up to approximately 2,000 meters (6,500 feet).

Where to look

Field tips

1. Listen for their calls. Their cheerful chirping and chattering calls are often the first indication of their presence, especially in gardens or around buildings.
2. Look in open areas. Scan open ground, lawns, and paths where they forage for seeds. They are often in small groups.
3. Check around human structures. Look for them perching on fences, rooftops, telephone wires, or foraging near buildings and farm structures.
4. Visit bird feeders. If you have bird feeders in their range, they are highly likely to visit, especially for mixed seed or millet.

Migration

Resident throughout its range, with no significant migratory movements. Local movements may occur in response to food availability.
