Sparrow song and calls

Birdsong and calls are often the easiest way to identify the Sparrow, especially when the bird is hidden in dense foliage. Below is what to listen for.

Song

Songs are typically simple, repetitive series of chirps, cheeps, and trills. Not considered melodious. For example, the House Sparrow's song is a monotonous series of 'cheep-cheep-cheep' notes.

Calls

A variety of calls, most commonly a loud, insistent 'cheep' or 'chirrup' used for contact, alarm, and begging. Alarm calls are sharper and more urgent.

When they vocalize

Vocalize throughout the day, particularly active and noisy in the mornings and evenings, and during the breeding season.
