Blue Grosbeak look-alikes

Key differences

Male Indigo Buntings are a brighter, more iridescent blue (not as deep or purplish as Blue Grosbeak) and lack the rusty wing bars. They also have a smaller, more pointed bill. Female Indigo Buntings are plainer brown, lacking the distinct wing bars and often having faint streaking on the breast, and are smaller than female Blue Grosbeaks.

Key differences

Male Lazuli Buntings have a bright blue head and back, a white belly, and a distinct cinnamon breast band, along with two white wing bars. They are found in western North America. Female Lazuli Buntings are duller brown with a bluish wash and two buffy wing bars, but are smaller and lack the overall robust appearance of a Blue Grosbeak.

Key differences

Eastern Bluebirds are a brighter, sky-blue with a rusty breast and white belly. They have a much thinner, insectivorous bill and lack wing bars. Their posture is more upright, and they are typically found in more open, park-like settings.
