Explore coastal mangrove areas and estuaries where they hunt for fish and crustaceans.
Canals and Reservoirs
They can also be found along man-made canals and reservoirs, provided there is suitable prey and perching sites.
Field tips
- Look for Perches. Stork-billed Kingfishers often sit motionless on prominent, often exposed, perches overlooking the water, such as dead branches, snags, or power lines. Scan these areas carefully.
- Listen for Calls. Their loud, harsh calls can often betray their presence before they are seen. Learn to recognize their distinctive vocalizations.
- Be Patient. They can be quite shy and wary. Patience is key, as they may remain still for long periods before diving or moving.
- Early Morning/Late Afternoon. Activity is often higher during the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late afternoon.
